The sample identification is coded. The breakdown for this code is .
' BE5-D20
[sample identification example]
The B indicates the sample was taken from a borehole
Ia The "E" indicates the direction away from the former UST tank
location Letters used in this survey are E,N,W,S, & C for East,
North ,West, South, and Center respectively.w -
" The "5" indicates the distance away from former UST side
• The "D" indicates the sample was taken at a depth below ground
level
• The "20" is depth the sample was taken below the ground
Four hand auger bonngs were made surrounding the former location of the underground
storage tank Borehole spacings were positioned five feet our perpendicular to the former edge
of Tank B. One borehole on the south side of the site was positioned between the former
location of Tank B and its fuel pump. This was intended to test for leakage or spilling that
could of originated from the fuel pump, product lines, or Tank B A fifth boring was made
through the nucleus of the prior tank location to test vertical contaminant migration
Soil samples were taken at five (5) foot intervals to a total depth of 20 feet According to
California Department of Water Resources (DWR), "Lines of F4.ual Elevations Of Water in
Wells. Unconfined A4mifer. San Joaquin, and Sacramento Valleys_' , Spring 2,986, the
groundwater level is at approximately 25 feet below ground surface at the site For this reason
the borings were designed to reach a total depth of 20 feet to prevent penetration of the water
table or the capillary fringe No water was encountered in any boring
If the chemical analysis of the samples were to indicate contamination above state action levels
with these five borings, four more bonngs were to be made. These four borings would be
hand augured to the same depths as the previous bonngs, and with equivalent sample intervals
and depths. Their location would be ten (10) feet perpendicular to the former position of Tank
B This method of stepping out in five foot increments was to continue until the soil samples
were "clean", and lateral closure could be accomplished
Field screening of excavated samples was performed using an Organic Vapor Meter (OVM,
United Technologies Bacharach Sniffer 503), visual olfactory, and geological techniques The
OVM was used to conduct baggy head space analysis on selected soil samples Ultimate
confirmation of in-situ soil acceptability utilized analysis of soil samples by a State certified
laboratory for diesel
DUFOUR ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
PCP LODI CANNING UST CLOSURE
GSA 3/PCP LODI SAM 10 JULY 1991
I3
