KLEINFELDER
3 SOIL ASSESSMENT
.r To assess the possible presence of petroleum hydrocarbons in the unsaturated soil and map
the lateral and vertical extent of potential contamination, soil samples were collected from
seven borings. The locations of the tank excavation and the soil borings are shown on Plate
3, Boring Location Map.
3.1 SOIL SAMPLES
On December 1, 1988, B-1 through B-7 were drilled in the area of the tank excavation. B-1
through B-4 were placed approximately 2 to 4 feet from the north, south, east, and west
edges of the previous tank excavation. B-5 through B-7 are approximately 13 feet
northwest, 8 feet southwest, and 10 feet west, respectively, of the western edge of the tank
excavation (Plate 3, Boring Location Map).
During the sample collection, an experienced environmental geologist classified the
`y subsurface soil and logged the boreholes. Descriptions of the soil encountered in each
boring and identification of the sampling intervals are presented on the Logs of Borings,
Plates 5 through 11 (Appendix B). A copy of the Unified Soil Classification System (used
to identify soil) is included as Plate 4 (Appendix B).
B-1 was advanced until free water was encountered at approximately 16 feet below the
surface. This boring was sampled continuously to construct a boring log of the lithologies
present in the vicinity of the tank excavation. After approximately 50 minutes, the static
water level appeared to be at approximately 13 feet, 7 inches below the surface. Soil
samples were collected and analyzed from this boring at 5.5, 10, and 15 foot depths.
The soil encountered in the borings consisted of course sands to clays. The sands were
generally slightly moist, nonplastic, and loosely compacted. The finer clays were generally
L. moist, slightly plastic to plastic, and were firmly compacted. The lithology at the site is not
homogeneous. Variations in lithologies are present at specific vertical depths. Boring logs
LN with sample descriptions are given in Appendix B, Plates 5 through 11.
r`.
150-88-2193 3
