Box 5811
San Mateo, California 94402
LEM9TED SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION
ARCO FACILITY NO. 2093
3424 TRACY BOULEVARD, TRACY, CALIFORNIA
Dear Mr. Carmel:
This letter report presents the results of a limited subsurface investigation conducted on May 4,
1993, at ARCO Products Company (ARCO) Facility No. 2093, located at 3425 Tracy
Boulevard, Tracy, California(Site, Figure 1). The purpose of the investigation was to determine
if petroleum hydrocarbons are present in soil north of the pump islands. ARCO was considering
installation of new underground storage tanks into this area of the Site. Roux Associates (Roux)
drilled five soil borings to a depth of 16.5 ft. below ground surface (bgs) (Figure 2).
Undisturbed soil samples were collected from each of the boreholes for laboratory analysis.
Methods of Investi ag tion
The soil borings were drilled by Wayne Drilling Company, a contractor licensed in the state of
California as a Water Well Driller (C-57 No. 376345), using a CME-75 drill rig equipped with
8-inch outside diameter, continuous flight, hollow stem augers.
Samples for soil characterization and laboratory analysis were collected in the boreholes by
driving a 21/2-inch diameter, 24-inch long, California Modified, Split Spoon Sampler ahead of
the auger. The California Sampler contained four clean 2-inch diameter, 6-inch long, stainless
steel liners. The number of blows to drive the sampler each 6 inches were counted and recorded
on the geologic logs.
One or two stainless steel liners from each California Sampler were retained for possible
laboratory analysis. Immediately after the sampler was recovered from the borehole and opened,
the ends of one liner were covered with aluminum foil and plastic end caps. The ends were then
wrapped with duct tape. Each sample was labeled with the Site location, date, time,
identification code, and sampler's initials. Each sample was placed in a plastic bag and stored
,. on ice in a closed cooler chest while in transit to the laboratory. Chain-of-Custody
documentation was maintained for all samples.
Doc #fA159W01.1.6
