ATTACHMENT B
FIELD AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES
Chevron 9-8264, 3775 Tracy Boulevard, Tracy, California
Health and Safety
Prior to performing field work at the site, SECOR prepared a Site-Specific Health and Safety
Plan required by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) Standard
"Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response" guidelines (29 CFR 1910 120) and
by California Occupational Health and Safety Administration (Cal-OSHA) "Hazardous
Waste Operations and Emergency Response" guidelines (CCR Title 8, Section 5192) The
Site-Specific Health and Safety Plan was reviewed by field staff and contractors before
beginning field operations at the site
CPT Borings and Soil and Groundwater Sampling
The CPT soil borings were advanced using a direct push cone penetrometer testing (CPT)rig
to log soil stratigraphy Immediately adjacent to each CPT borehole, a second direct-push
borehole was advanced to collect discrete soil and groundwater samples Soil samples were
collected using an Envirocore sampler, or similar technology Soil samples were retained in
plastic sleeves and capped with Teflon squares and plastic end caps Groundwater samples
were collected using a hydropunch, or similar technology, by lowering a stainless steel bailer
into accumulated groundwater in the borehole, then retrieving and transferring the water into
laboratory supplied containers The soil and groundwater sample containers were placed on
ice for transport to the laboratory accompanied by chain-of-custody documentation Down-
hole boring and sampling equipment was steam-cleaned prior to and following the
completion of each soil boring Down-hole sampling equipment was washed in an
AlconoxTM solution between samples
Laboratory Procedures
Collected soil and groundwater samples collected were analyzed for the presence of total
petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd) and total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline
(TPHg) and methanol by EPA Method 8015, benzene, toluene ethylbenzene, xylenes
(BTEX), and the fuel oxygenates methyl tertiary butyl ether (MtBE), ethyl tertiary butyl
ether (EtBE), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME), tertiary butyl
alcohol (TBA), ethylene dibromide (EDB), 1-2 dichloroethanc (1-2 DCA), and ethanol by
EPA Method 8260B
Rinsate Water
Water generated during steam cleaning was temporarily stored in DOT-approved 55-gallon
drums pending transport to an appropriate disposal or treatment facility
