1
' 40 SITE DEMOLITION AND REMEDIATION
Between December 1992 and January 1993 the facility was demolished during which
two gasoline USTs were removed, all product lines were removed, a septic tank was
' removed, the pump islands and station building were demolished, and the station
service bay hosts were removed Prior to the removal of the USTs, well MW-3 was
abandoned due to its proximity to the anticipated UST excavation Well MW-3 was
properly abandoned by filling the well annulus with grout
1
41 REMOVAL AND OVER-EXCAVATION OF THE USTs
1
At the time of their removal, the USTs appeared to be in good condition with no
' visible holes Based on the laboratory analysis of the initial pit bottom soil samples
(TP-1 A, TP-1 B, TP-2A, and TP-28) the location of the fuel leak appeared to be at the
rwest end of the northern UST Therefore, the leak may have been from the turbine
pump or associated piping connected to the northern UST The rinsate, tank, and
piping manifests and certificates of disposal are presented in the Mittelhauser letter
entitled Tank and Stockpile Soil Disposal for the subject site dated March 18, 1994
' Following the removal of the gasoline USTs, the area around the tanks was over-
excavated to remove hydrocarbon-affected soil The over-excavation was conducted
' under the direction of a Mittelhauser Geologist A field operated photoionization
detector (PID) was used to determine the location of soil containing elevated levels of
volatile hydrocarbons The majority of the UST over-excavation was conducted
between January 4 and 5, 1993 during which a state of California-certified mobil
laboratory (operated by GTEL Environmental Laboratories, Inc ) was onsite to receive
and analyze confirmation soil samples The laboratory analytical reports and chain-of-
custody documentation are presented in Appendix C
r
/ C ittelhauser
O R P O R A T I O N
P21 68R006 w91031841 3
r
