1 <br /> ' 40 SITE DEMOLITION AND REMEDIATION <br /> Between December 1992 and January 1993 the facility was demolished during which <br /> two gasoline USTs were removed, all product lines were removed, a septic tank was <br /> ' removed, the pump islands and station building were demolished, and the station <br /> service bay hosts were removed Prior to the removal of the USTs, well MW-3 was <br /> abandoned due to its proximity to the anticipated UST excavation Well MW-3 was <br /> properly abandoned by filling the well annulus with grout <br /> 1 <br /> 41 REMOVAL AND OVER-EXCAVATION OF THE USTs <br /> 1 <br /> At the time of their removal, the USTs appeared to be in good condition with no <br /> ' visible holes Based on the laboratory analysis of the initial pit bottom soil samples <br /> (TP-1 A, TP-1 B, TP-2A, and TP-28) the location of the fuel leak appeared to be at the <br /> rwest end of the northern UST Therefore, the leak may have been from the turbine <br /> pump or associated piping connected to the northern UST The rinsate, tank, and <br /> piping manifests and certificates of disposal are presented in the Mittelhauser letter <br /> entitled Tank and Stockpile Soil Disposal for the subject site dated March 18, 1994 <br />' Following the removal of the gasoline USTs, the area around the tanks was over- <br /> excavated to remove hydrocarbon-affected soil The over-excavation was conducted <br />' under the direction of a Mittelhauser Geologist A field operated photoionization <br /> detector (PID) was used to determine the location of soil containing elevated levels of <br /> volatile hydrocarbons The majority of the UST over-excavation was conducted <br /> between January 4 and 5, 1993 during which a state of California-certified mobil <br /> laboratory (operated by GTEL Environmental Laboratories, Inc ) was onsite to receive <br /> and analyze confirmation soil samples The laboratory analytical reports and chain-of- <br /> custody documentation are presented in Appendix C <br /> r <br /> / C ittelhauser <br /> O R P O R A T I O N <br /> P21 68R006 w91031841 3 <br /> r <br />
