h
strength of road construction materials is the California Test
Method 366 (See appendix A) . This test determines the ability of
a material to transmit horizontal pressure under a given vertical
load. The value gained from the test indicates the ability of a
pavement to resist plastic deformation or movement under traffic.
The higher the number of stabilometer value, the higher the
quality of the material for use as a pavement. The minimum
stabilometer value for 3/6" or No.4 maximum aggregate to be used
in California for state highway construction is a 34 stabilometer
value. Most commercial asphalt concrete suppliers in the
Stockton and Sacramento areas produce No. 4 maximum asphalt
concrete paving material in the 32 to 35 stabilometer value
range. A very high value of 44 can be made only from 144%
crushed high quality limestone.
TESTING
Kleinfelder began the testing program by mixing a combined
mixture of the soil samples from the ISC Winery with, 3% SS-1H,
4% SS-1H, 4 1/2% SS-1H, and 5% SS-1H. Mixtures were mixed and
compacted to the requirements of stabilometer value test, as per
CTM 366. These samples were allowed to dry in the mold for 2
days before being tested in the standard stabilometer test
machine. Results were disappointing. The mixture stabilometer
values were lees than the original untreated soil sample without
the addition of SS-1H. More tests were run using both quicklime
and cement as an additive. Again these samples were allowed to
dry in the mold for two days, and again the stabilometer values
were disappointing.
Richard Toy, Operations Manager for Kleinfelder, analyzed the
test information and the molded samples. He suggested that more
time was need for the water to evaporate from the emulsion
mixture. Two samples were placed in plastic bags and sealed to
duplicate stockpile conditions. After two weeks storage in the
plastic bags, the samples were retested and found to have a
---------------_--------------------- --------.._s.tabilame_ter_.__vl-ue.--of.--39 (See appendix R TABLE 1) . Kleinfelder
was asked to rerun the Series of tests using the same mix
1
3
