TABLE 2-2
I
I Gr.N=AL RISc APPRAISAL
FOR PRCTECTION OF WATER QGA=TY:
APPLICABILITY CHECKI&IST YES No
j
1. Is the site in a mountainous area' (shaded moil
areas &/or areas with rocky subsurface cnnditions)
2 Is Zhe site 14-1 an area that could collect surface
rancf, or -ntarcept water from a source other than
the natural precipitation?
' 2 . Does the areal extent of sail contaminatz on
exceed 1000 feet-_ ? +
4 . Do the cnncentz-ataons of fuel constituents .n any
soil samples exceed the following amounts:
benzene - 100 apm, toluene - 80 ppm, xylene - 40 x
! ppm, ethyl-benzene - 40 num?
5 . A.,-.a there any records or evidence of man--made or
natural cm3ects which could provide a conduit for
vez-tical m_grauon of -leachate?
5. Do any boring or excavation logs show the presence
' of fractures, 70_qts or Faults that could act as a i
cnnduz.t for vertical magrataon of leachata?
7 Da a_nv baring logs show that contaminated soil
could- be with=n 5 ft. of highest ground water?
8 . Do any borl..ng 1 cgs show the presence of a layer
' material, 5 ft. thick or more, which is more than X
75$ sand and/or gravel?
Directions:
1. Baring logs taken during the general risk
appraisal can be used to answer questions 5--8 . In
addition, analytical results of the soil samples
' taken during the general risk appraisal can be
used to answer questions 3 and 4.
2. Lateral migration of constituents to problem areas
' should also be considered in questions 5-8 .
3 . The above checklist contains questions which are
designed to identify sites with environmental
' conditions which could produce a greater risk to
ground water than was modeled. The results of the
general risk appraisal are most applicable if all
of the questions on the checklist can be answered
' "no" with reasonable certainty. If any of the
questions an the checklist cannot be answered
;no" , then the results of the general risk
' appraisal may be less valid.
38
