Z1 INC
The calculations made by WaterWork (1990) from the pumping test indicated a recovery
rate of 3 6 to 15 gpm was necessary to recover dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons in the
groundwater which had moved approximately 70 feet down-gradient The proposed
hydraulic control plan was to utilize a pump in monitoring well MW-1 initially operating at 8
to 10 gpm This rate could be adjusted based on field observations and would allow MW-1
the greatest recovery of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater from the area
of highest documented contamination
A one-half horse power stainless steel, explosion proof, submersible pump was installed
by CEECON in monitoring well MW-I for groundwater recovery as part of the groundwater
treatment system in September 1992 A detailed description of the system and its initial
operation is presented in a report dated June 7, 1993 by CEECON (CEECON, 1993)
The entire groundwater treatment system was mounted on a trailer and included water
filters, an aeration system, a water hardness chemical injector and activated carbon filters
The pump was capable of producing from 0 5 to 15 gpm and was throttled back as
necessary All power supply and discharge lines were run underground in separate
conduit Instrumentation and controls on this system included water level indicators,
transfer pumps, flow indicators, flow totalizer and sample ports
Due to the low transmissivity of the aquifer, productivity from the extraction well (MW-1)
was limited Extracted groundwater was treated and discharged to an onsite storm drain
Groundwater was extracted from Monitoring Well MWA at the flow rate of 0 5 gpm A
detailed diagram and process flow-chart of the remediation system is presented in the
CEECON (1993) report
The hydraulic control was observed by monitoring the drawdown of the potentiometric
surface on a monthly frequency Quantative analyses of groundwater samples continued
on a quarterly basis as part of the site groundwater monitoring program
19150011 005 33
