s
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS OF ABOVE WORK
A review of all of the data obtained to date can be summarized as
follows :
1 Soil contamination was first measured in MW-1 at 211611 , (BTEX
only, ) with the highest levels in the interval 2616" to 311611 ,
BTEX & TPH-G ) Only Ethylbenzene was measured from the core
sample taken at 3616"
2 Soil contamination was first detected in MW-2 at 251611 , (only
xylene ) Ethylbenzene & xylene were found in the core sample from
301611 , and xylene & TPH-G were measured at 3516"
3 A small amount of benzene & TPH-G was measued in the soil
samaple taken from MW-3 at 51 , and minor amounts of TPH-G were
detected from samples at 101611 , 151611 , & 2016" This shallow
contamination was most likely due to leaching from the removed
spoil which was stored next to the location of the well . BTEX &
TPH-G were measured from soil samples taken at 251611 , 301611 , &
351611
• 4 Groundwater was measured at an average depth of 36 .381 , which
corresponds closely with levels located during placement of the
monitoring wells . County Flood Control District maps indicate
that the water table was around 27 ' bgl in the spring of 1983 &
1986 The highest levels of petroleum constituents detected in
soil samples taken during the recent work occurred below 251 ,
which agrees closely with the 1983 & 1986 water level
measurements
5 . The hydraulic gradient as measured on July 13 , 1995 is to the
northeast at about 15 ' /mile - refer to PLATE XIV for details
This corresponds to the regional gradient in the area
6 . The highest levels of contamination measured in somal samples
were from MW-3 , the lowest from MW-2 However, the highest
levels of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene & TPH as gasoline in
water samples were from MW-1; total xylenes were highest in MW-3
THP as gasoline measured in MW-2 & MW-3 were 2 . 7 mg/L & 2 6 mg/L,
whereas MW-1 measured 6 5 mg/I Refer to TABLES II & III for
details .
7 . Maps showing lines of equal concentration of benzene & TPH as
gasoline, (PLATES XV & XVI, ) show that the highest levels were
measured in MW-1, which is upgradient from the tank site .
9
