In order to determine if SVE is likely to be highly effective, somewhat effective or ineffective, a
pilot scale study well first need to be performed at the site Data provided by a pilot study is
necessary to properly design a full-scale SVE system Pilot studies also provide information on
the concentration of VOCs that are likely to be extracted during the early stages of the operation
A pilot test will require the installation of three vapor wells to depths of 10 to 15 feet bgs, and a
single air sparging well to a depth of approximately 25 to 30 feet bgs Once these wells are in
' place, appropriate equipment will be plumbed to these wells and a pilot scale study will be
performed
In terms of protection of public health and groundwater quality, in-situ air sparging with SVE
appears to be the best remedial candidate for the project site
11.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
tBased on the soil and groundwater data compiled and included in this technical report and the
presence of the Thornton Municipal Supply Well No 2, Smith Technology recommends active
remediation of the petroleum hydrocarbons beneath the site to prevent the migration of mobile
constituents thus threatening human health and the environment Smith Technology recommends
performing a pilot scale test to evaluate to effectiveness of in-situ air sparging with SVE to
remediate the residual petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater
Due to the potential of dissolved contaminants migrating toward the nearby municipal well, the
installation of an additional monitoring well between the municipal well and MW4 appears
warranted This sentinel well should be engineered to ensure the dissolved hydrocarbon plume
does not impact the municipal water supply The construction of this well may include a nested
' well configuration including discrete screen intervals at different depths to monitor the
contaminants potential migration vertically toward the municipal well's sanitary seal
' Upon regulatory concurrence of the preferred remedial action method, a work plan for performing
an appropriate pilot study will be prepared and submitted for regulatory approval
II
w 1943251repor0sunupt doc 9
1 •
