2.
3. l Soil Sampling
Phase 2 drilling was conducted by Spectrum Exploration, Inc (C57 512289) utilizing a hollow
stem auger drill ng A field geologist continuously logged all drill cuttings and cored soil
samples utilizing the Unified Soil Classification System (Appendix II) Descriptions of soil types
1 encountered and sample collection intervals are included on the boring/well logs (Appendix II)
Cored soil samples were collected at five foot intervals using a 2-inch diameter split-spoon
sampler containing three brass tubes The cored samples and drill cuttings were characterized
for soil type, moisture content, and evidence of petroleum contamination Moreover, a PID was
used as a screening device for the detection of petroleum hydrocarbon vapors in drill cuttings
and cored samples Soil samples collected at the water table interface were submitted for
laboratory analysis Soil sampling results are summarized in Table 2 Laboratory data sheets
and chain-of-custody documentation are included in Appendix IV
3.2.2 Monitoring Well Construction
Soil borings MW4, MWS, and MWb were subsequently completed as groundwater monitoring
wells to further assess the extent of groundwater contamination beneath the site, and to provide
measurement points for the determination of groundwater flow direction and hydraulic gradient
The locations of the site monitoring wells are shown on Figure 2
1 Each well was constructed with 2-inch PVC casing The screened interval of each well was
positioned from approximately 5 feet above to 15 feet below the encountered water table to allow
' for seasonal water level fluctuations. The screen slot size is 0 01 inch
3.2.3 Groundwater Sampling
On October 29, 1991, the wells were monitored and developed in accordance with RESNA's
QA/QC Protocol (Appendix III). Field purge logs are included in Appendix V Water samples
were then collected from the wells, placed on ice, and transported under chain-of-custody to
' Applied Analytical for analysis The samples were analyzed for BTEX and TPHG utilizing EPA
8020 and 8015 methodologies, respectively The analytical results are summarized in Table 3
Laboratory data sheets and chain-of-custody documentation are included in Appendix IV
' GPR12271PL 5
