• were taken as an aid to define any deep peiietrat3-on of
contaminates and their direction of migration While
excavating in the southeast corner, where the cesspool was
located, two deeper layers of flat rocks were found, at
about 16' and 19' bgl , also a discarded kettle of about one
gallon size One conjecture would be that the cesspool had
been deeper and was back-filled in stages , although the
brick wall stopped at about 8 ' bgl Owing to this finding, a
20' sample was taken from this corner (#9 )
All soil samples were taken by DRA, using sterile brass
tubes , aluminum f l on the ends with plastic caps and duct
tape for sealin The samples were placed in an ice chest
with a measured 4 degree F temperature C 0 C forms for
all samples are ttached The samples were taken from the
back hoe bucket at the surface Careful attention was given
to make sure the soil was taken from where noted All
samples were taken by hand-driving the brass tubes into the
soil No composite samples were taken
WJH has photographs of the excavation walls , available for
examination, which show the demarcation between the two sand
entities and the iron staining
SPOIL HANDLING AND SAMPLING
Spoil from the excavation was continuously removed to a
temporary storage location at the west end of the garage and
storehouse buildings The ground was covered with plastic
sheeting by JTO and the spoil placed on top Two spoil
piles were formed as shown on Figure 7 R. Thorpe and DRA
sampled the spoil piles prior to covering with plastic All
sampling techniques noted above were used The spoil piles
were then covered with black plastic sheeting and anchored
in place by weighing the edges with clean soil
TEST RESULTS
The results of laboratory analyzes of soil samples from the
excavation and the spoil piles are summarized in Table A
The results of water analyzes from the two domestic wells
are listed on Table B Copies of the laboratory reports ,
chain of custodys , and QA/QC are included as attachment 3 at
the end of this report
DISCUSSION OF TEST RESULTS
The results of the laboratory analyses of soil samples from
the excavation and spoil piles have been added to Figure 7 ,
(relabeled Figure 7A, ) to facilitate evaluation The
6
