' ' KLEIfVFELL)ER
ATTACHMENT A
. KLEINFELDER FIELD PROTOCOL
A-1 FIELD PREPARATION
Before performing work in the field, environmental staff reviewed the scope of work and
health and safety plan, coordinated the work to be done with their supervisor, assembled the
necessary sample containers, and checked, calibrated and cleaned equipment to be used in the
field Underground Service Alert (USA) also was contacted prior to drilling to check the
boring location.
A-2 DRILLING AND SUBSURFACE SOIL SAMPLING
A-2 i Drilling
The soil boring was advanced using a truck-mounted drill ng, equipped with hollow stem
augers Subsurface soil samples were collected from the soil borings. During drilling, an
experienced environmental geologist classified the soil, logged the stratigraphy of the borings,
and collected soil samples.
A-2 2 Collection of Soil Samples
Soil samples were collected approximately every 5 feet for logging. Samples were collected
by advancing the boring to a point immediately above the desired sampling depth and then
driving (vertical borings) a Modified California Sampler, lined with three brass tubes, into the
undisturbed soil The sampler was then removed from the bottom of the boring The ends of
the bottom (third) tube were covered with Teflon and sealed with tight-fitting plastic caps.
Each sample was individually labeled. The label includes Kleinfelder's name, fob number, the
date and time the sample was collected, the employee number of the individual who performed
the sampling, and a unique five-digit sample identification number
A-2 3 Sample Handling
After labeling, the sample was immediately stored in an iced cooler for transport to
Kleinfelder's office sample control then to the analytical laboratory A Kleinfelder chain-of-
custody form accompanied the cooler. The chain-of-custody form includes Kleinfelder's
name, address and telephone number, the employee number of the individual who performed
the sampling, the sample numbers, the date and time the samples were collected, the number
of containers each sample occupies, and the analyses for which the samples were being
submitted The chain-of-custody form was signed by each person who handled the samples,
including all Kleinfelder employees and the receiving employee of office sample control and
the analytical laboratory when the samples were delivered
A-2 4 Decontamination of Equipment
To reduce the potential for cross-contamination, augers and associated equipment were steam
cleaned prior to drilling each boring. In addition, sampling equipment was cleaned with a
tnsodium-phosphate wash and rinsed with distilled water prior to collecting each soil sample.
A-2 5 Soil Cutting Disposal
Drill cuttings were placed in 55-gallon drums and left on site for disposal by the site owner. If
requested, Kleinfelder can coordinate disposal of soil and water after analytical results are
available.
FR10-26(1993) Page A-1 24-220172-A00
Copynght 1993 Klemfelder, Inc
