Di Salvo Tmck Lines-SIR
March 9,1995
00 Page-5.
sample was transferred from the bailer to a one liter glass bottle and to four 40-m1 glass VOA vials
fitted with Teflon-lined septums. Each VOA vial was inverted and tapped to assure that no air
bubbles were present. Each groundwater sample was labeled and placed in a cooler chilled with real
ice and delivered under chain-of-custody procedures to GeoAnalytical Laboratories within 24-hours of
sample collection. One trip blank was retained inside the cooler in a unopened VOA vial and
L" delivered to the laboratory for groundwater sample quality control. Following collection of the
groundwater samples, each soil probe was filled, using a tremie pipe, up to the ground surface with a
L slung of neat cement.
61. 3.3 Field Observations
I The area surrounding the former tank excavation was paved with asphalt. Beneath the asphalt,
` a 10 inch thick layer of aggregate base material was present. The native soil at the site was present
from a depth of approximately 10 inches bgs to at least 16 feet bgs. The native soil in SPI through
L SP4 generally consisted of dark gray (N3) to moderately yellowish brown, (5YR 4/1) organic clay.
SP1 and SP2 contained from 5% to 20% very fine sand from approximately 8 feet to 16 feet bgs.
L
Trace very fine sand was present in SP3 from approximately 4 feet to 9 feet. The Di Salvo Truck
Line Ventura Avenue site is located approximately 2,000 feet south of the San Joaquin River deep
Lwater channel in the Port of Stockton.
LA moderate petroleum odor was noted in the soil samples collected from SP2 at 6 and 12 feet
bgs (SP2-6 and SP2-12). PID readings for SP2-6 and SP2-12 ranged from 60 ppm to 80 ppm,
L respectively. A slight petroleum odor was noted in SP4-12 and the PTD detected 1 ppm hydrocarbon
gases. No hydrocarbon odors or PID readings were noted in core samples collected from
immmediately above the capillary zone in SP1, SP3 and SP4 or in the core samples collected from the
L
capillary zone in SPI and SP3. A sheen was noted on the groundwater samples collected from SP2
j and SP4. No sheen was noted on the groundwater samples collected from SPI or in the trace amount
i
of groundwater purged from SP3.
4.0 LABORATORY ANALYSES
The soil and water samples collected from the Di Salvo site were delivered under chain-of-
custody procedures to GeoAnalytical Laboratories, Inc., located in Modesto, California.
