p.
Lammersvilfe Schooi District 202/899.7004
July 16, 1990 19
No-Action Advantages
1. No site disruption,
2. Low cost for implementation.
_
No-Action Disadvantages
_.. 1. Requires an extended time frame to complete,
2. Higher costs for added monitoring.
3. Possible oil-site migration.
Because of the potential for off-site migration, the no-action option will not be pursued at this time.
9,2 GROUNDWATER EXTRACTION AND TREATMENT
The remedial action of groundwater extraction and treatment involves the installation of a recovery
well to pump groundwater to the surface for treatment prior to discharge (to the sanitary or storm sewer
system) or re-infiltration.. The pumping action creates a cone of depression that hydraulically controls
migration of hydrocarbons in the water and induces Now toward the well. Discharge of the treated water
in an upgradient well or gallery can enhance this movement. Treatment options for the extracted water
would depend on the rate and degree of treatment required, but would typically consist of air stripping,
carbon adsorption,or biological treatment. The advantages and disadvantages of groundwater extraction
and treatment are outlined below:
Groundwater Extraction and Treatment Advantage
Logistically simple to install with minimum interference to land use.
2 Petroleum hydrocarbons would be removed from groundwater.
3. Proven technology for establishing hydraulic control
4. If biological treatment is used, hydrocarbons would be destroyed.
5. Moderate installation costs.
Groundwater Extraction and Treatment Disadvantaces
1. Requires permitting for water discharge.
2. Requires continued monitoring after installation.
3. Does not treat petroleum hydrocarbons in the overlying sail.
4. Moderate to high operation and maintenance costs.
_ =4 GROUNDIVATER
TECHNOLOGY,1,NC.
