r }
07 May 2002
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
Page 5of16
collected from the north storm pond for PCP, formaldehyde, lead, zinc, chromium, volatile
halocarbons and volatile aromatics. PCP was detected in one sample at 1.5 ppb, formaldehyde was
detected at 47 and 60 ppb and zinc at 14 and 21 ppb. According to Kleinfelder, the pond contained
reeds, small fish and aquatic life at the time of sampling. KleinfeldeX interpreted the detected
concentrations to not indicate a significant discharge ofwaste and no further assessment was deemed
necessary. A copy of the original report of findings was not available to GE.
One soil boring(PB 12)was advanced near the northwest corner of the north storm water basin for
collection of a grab ground water sample. Dissolved chromium was detected in the ground water
sample at a concentration of 0.095 mg/1. The detected concentration of chromium in the water
sample collected from PB12 is above the MCL of 0.05 mg/l.
AGE proposes a boring north of PB 12 to assess for metals-impact down- radient of the north storm
water pond.
3.4. BURN PITS AND FORMER TEEPEE STRUCTURE INCINERATOR
Waste wood and trash were disposed on-site in two open bum pits we t of the storm water pond
from the 1960s to the late 1970s, and in a metal teepee incinerator south of the former cover plant
building and north of the former box factory building on the west side oft ie railroad track traversing
the property. The bum pits were backfilled circa 1984 and were subse luently re-excavated circa
1994. Soil excavated from the bum pits and former teepee area is stockpiled on the site north and
east of the northern bum pit.
3.4.1. Burn Pits and Former Teepee Area Assessment Status
Laboratory analysis of soil samples collected from the burn pits and teepee structure area by
Kleinfelder revealed localized elevated concentrations of metals (copper, lead and zinc) compared
to background concentrations and low concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons(DCMA,PCE and
TCE).The concentrations encountered,while locally elevated for somealytes,have generally been
below levels of environmental concern. Locations of the burnpits and teepee structure are shown on
Figure 2.
With the exception of soil sample 63599 (a soil sample from the fill in th north pit) among samples
collected in 1992, metals concentrations ranged as follows:
• Nickel- <10 mg/kg to 30 mg/kg;
• Copper - 29 to 220 mg/kg;
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
