O tion 5 -- In-Situ Bioremediation
• Similar to in-situ bioventing, in-situ bioremediation would treat TPH-impacted
soils with nutrient-supplemented water, and contain that water with an extraction
well network installed in the first water-beanng zone Since this option requires
groundwater containment, the potential risk to impacting groundwater is
significantly greater than Option 4, in-situ bioventing The cost and effectiveness
of this option would both be slightly higher than Option 4 The limited
effectiveness in the reduction of the TPH concentration of this option render it
feasible but relatively expensive
Option 6 — Excavation and Off-Site Treatment/Disposal
• The principal advantage of this option is the reliability and effectiveness of this
technology This option would require excavation to 30 feet below ground
surface to treat soils with TPH concentrations above background The
disadvantages of this option include the cost, the extensive disruption to the site,
and the potential for dust migration and the large number of truck trips needed
to export the large volume of soil, and import the clean fill This option is not
considered feasible for a site which has no impacted groundwater, inasmuch as
' the costs are not warranted in light of the absence of significant risks to human
health and the environment
Option 7 — Excavation and On-Site Treatment
• Similar to Option b, this option is effective and reliable since the advent of
mobile rotary kiln technology, which has become available for treatment of TPH-
impacted soils After thermal oxidation of TPH, the treated soil may be
backfilled into the excavation, which eliminates the need for importing clean
backfill The high cost, disruption of the site, and potential for off-site dust and
vapor migration are the principal disadvantages of this option The costs of this
option are so high that this approach does not appear to be feasible
sAC127 10 27
DAMES 6r MOORE
