5.1.2 Reliability
Technologies based on unproven methodology or too difficult to implement
were eliminated from further consideration, Best Demonstrated Available
Technologies (BDAT) were also the criteria for reliability.
' 5.1.3 Availability
Availability of specific technologies and required attendant equipment,
materials, procedures, and craft disciplines were considered during
screening. Technologies using materials from foreign sources were screened
' out where similar domestic technologies perform adequately. In addition,
those technologies requiring difficult procurement procedures (i.e.,
' technologies that would result in sole-source remediation due to proprietary
and patent rights) were not favored in the screening process.
5.1.4 Timeliness of Implementation
Technologies requiring excessive time to implement were eliminated during
the screening process. Given the size of the site and the extent of
contamination, it was assumed that one year is a reasonable time frame for
completion of a remedial alternative.
5.1.5 Cost
Order of magnitude unit costs were used to compare technologies for
screening purposes. Unit costs include capital, operating, and maintenance
throughout the life of remediation. Waste characteristics which adversely
affect specific technology cost were identified.
I
kh
5-2
GGA/0186b
