i • <br /> 8.0 RESPIRATORY PROTECTION <br /> 81 <br /> RESPIRATOR SELECTION <br /> Engineering controls and safe work practices (e g elimination of the source of <br /> contamination, ventilation equipment, working upwind, limiting exposure time, etc) <br /> I must always be the primary control for air contaminants Respirators will be used if <br /> engineering or work practice controls are not feasible for controlling airborne exposures <br /> below acceptable concentrations and as an interim control measure while engineering or <br /> work practice controls are implemented <br /> Once the need for respirators has been established, the respirators will be selected on the <br /> basis of the hazards to which the worker is exposed Only NIOSH-approved respirators <br /> will be issued Selection criteria established in 8 CCR 5144 has been used by the HSP <br /> Preparer in determining respirator requirements for this project <br /> CAUTION Full face piece or half-face piece air purifying respirators are not to <br /> be used where there is an oxygen deficiency Only air-supplied respirators with <br /> an emergency escape cylinder or self-contained breathing apparatus will be worn <br /> when an oxygen deficiency exists <br /> CAUTION A respirator does not protect against excessive heat or against <br /> hazardous substance that can attack the body through the skin <br /> The form of the airborne contaminants has been evaluated based upon the suspected <br /> contaminants of concern Evaluation of the concentration of the airborne chemical <br /> hazard will be performed using direct reading instruments to determine what type <br /> respirator will be used Airborne readings will be compared to Action Levels in the table <br /> in Section 10 See action level/respirator requirements in Section 6 1 <br /> i <br /> 8 2 MEDICAL SCREENING <br /> Project employees are enrolled in the Dames & Moore Medical Surveillance Program and <br /> are medically evaluated in compliance with the requirements of 8 CCR 5144(a)(10) <br /> Employees not physically or psychologically capable of wearing respirators are not <br /> assigned to this project <br /> The medical status of each employee is reviewed annually and as may be deemed <br /> necessary by the examining physician if the physical status of the employee changes <br /> 83 FIT TESTING <br /> A person wearing a respirator must be clean-shaven in the area of the face piece seal <br /> Long hair, sideburns, and skullcaps that extend under the seal are not allowed Glasses <br /> with temple pieces extending under the seal are not allowed for full-face respirators <br /> AMFOREST 21 7 21 <br />
