I. INTRODUCTION
This report issues my findings regarding the Nitrate Loading and Soil Suitability Studies conducted
for this project, and correlating these findings for the design of an Onsite Wastewater Treatment
System(OWTS) for the Thornton's new residence. These Studies were required because of new
regulations enacted by the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department(EHD)to
determine if nitrate loading standards would be exceeded when improvements occur on a subject
Parcel. Specifically, concerns regarding nitrate loading could potentially occur when second unit
dwellings are constructed on comparatively small parcels.
Within the text of this Report, Bolded Section (§)numbers are referenced at the beginning of an
applicable Paragraph(s), or Appendices that correspond with the EHD Requirements Checklist.
Section Numbers referenced as SSS§, are sections applicable for the Soil Suitability Study
Requirements Checklist. Section Numbers referenced as NLS§, are sections applicable for the
Nitrate Loading Study Requirements Checklist. Other portions of text may also apply to other
sections of the Checklists, but may not be necessarily referenced.
The following summarizes the investigative parameters included to complete this report:
• A percolation test was performed in the proposed location of the future filter bed disposal
field. Test results indicate permeable soil.
• Soil chemical testing was conducted on a sample retrieved from the percolation test boring.
In addition, a backhoe test pit was excavated to 12 ft to check for groundwater and hardpan
strata, and to retrieve a soil sample from 10 ft for comparison purposes with the shallow soil
sample. Physical testing of the soil sample included texture particle size analysis for sand,
silt and clay content, and chemical testing analyses for the constituents that influence nitrate
loading.
• The nitrate loading to the on-site soils in combination with nitrate impact potential to the
underlying groundwater from percolating effluent was found to be excessive by EHD
Standards. Nitrate impact mitigation measures have been incorporated into my design of the
OWTS.
II. SOIL SUITABILITY STUDY FINDINGS
A. SUBJECT PROPERTY AND SURROUNDING STUDY AREA INFORMATION
SSS§ 1.1, 1.2. The Thornton's are proposing to construct a residential structure as a second unit
dwelling on a Parcel owned by his Mother. His on-site Mother's home is three bedrooms, two
baths, and the second unit dwelling is to be three bedrooms, two baths, for a total of six bedrooms.
SSS§ 1.3. The property is 1.37 acres as illustrated on the Assessors Parcel Map and is surrounded
by almond orchards, and very sparse rural residential structures. Manteca City Limits are located
approximately 1,500 ft to the northeast.
Page-2-
Chesney Considdiz
