t ,!
rF t
Mr. Harlin Knoll
June 29, 1999
Page 3
.i
;I
Hand Auger Soil Borings
Up to four shallow soil borings will be advanced aro ind the perimeter of the former UST pit to a
depth of.approximately 6-8 feet using a hand auge . The hand augered borings will be located
approximately 20-30 feet from the center of the former UST pit to determine the lateral extent of soil
contamination in the unsaturated zone. Proposed soil boring locations are shown on Figure 4. IM
Soil samples will be collected into a brass liner utilizing a slide hammer core sampler. The sample
will be immediately capped and placed in an iced cooler at a temperature of approximately4°
Centigrade. Cuttings generated through the use of the hand auger will be placed on and covered
with plastic sheeting pending disposal. Borings will be backfilled to the ground surface with neat
cement grout.
Laboratory Analyses
Soil and groundwater samples will be transported and r chain of custody protocol to a state certified
analytical laboratory.
Up to fifteen soil samples (three from the boring in the renter of the former USTs, two from each of the
perimeter borings, and one from each of the hand augere borings)will be submitted for analysis of total
petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) and to al petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd)
using EPA method 8015 modified; and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTE3), and methyl
tert butyl ether (MTBE) using EPA method 8020. Selected soil samples, based upon field evidence
of contamination and/or initial analytical results, will also be analyzed for gasoline oxygenate
additives using EPA method 8260. Selection of soil samples for laboratory analysis will be basedon
field evidence of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination such as discoloration, odors, and FID
readings, as well as lithologic changes. If no evidence of contamination is noted in the field, samples
from the capillary fringe and/or the bottom of the borings will be submitted for analysis.
Up to five groundwater samples will also be analyzed for the constituents of concern outlined above using
appropriate analytical methods.
Summary Report
i
A technical report describing field activities, analytical results, conclusions and recommendations will be
submitted to Mr. Mike Manser, San Joaquin County PHS/EHD, and the California Regional Water
Quality Control Board(CRWQCB).
A completed drilling permit application and associatt d fees will be submitted under separate cover
upon your approval of this workplan.
data/groundze/manser/wpo599.doc
f
t
