SECTION 2 Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton
CURRENT INVESTIGATION
iADDITIONAL SURFACE SOIL SAMPLING TO DEFINE THE EXTENT OF DDT IN SOIL
To further define the areal and vertical extent of pesticides in surface
and shallow subsurface soil at the Cal-Farm facility, thirteen soil
samples (SS-14 through SS-24A, SS-24B, and SS-25) were collected for
laboratory analysis from the facility on 12 December 1989. These
' samples were collected in the vicinity of the two areas identified
during the preliminary site investigation as containing elevated
concentrations of DDD, DDE, and DDT (concentrations greater than 1,000
ug/Kg, Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations) . Figure 6 shows
the approximate sampling locations
field Activities
' Surface soil samples SS-14 through SS-23 and SS-25 were collected at
depths of 0 to 6 inches below ground surface These samples were
' collected by packing soil into clean brass liners using disposable
plastic scoops. Soil samples SS-24A and SS-24B were collected at depths
of 6 to 12 inches below ground surface and 12 to 18 inches below ground
surface, respectively These samples were collected in deeper sods
near a "hot-spot" (Sample SS-11) in the yard to determine the
approximate vertical extent of DDT in soil Samples SS-24A and SS-24B
were collected by removing soil to a depth of 6 inches below ground
' surface and then driving a split spoon sampler containing three 1 .5-inch
by 6-inch long brass liners into the soil The top two liners were
retained for laboratory analyses. Soil retained in the third liner was
returned to the sampling location After sample collection, the ends of
the brass liners were covered with Teflon sheets and clean plastic end
caps The caps were secured with duct tape to prevent slippage during
shipping. A completed label was attached to each liner with the
following information: site name, collection date/time, sample number,
sample depth, and collector's initials. Samples were temporarily stored
and transported in a chilled ice-chest under Chain-of-Custody to the
' Kennedy/Jenks/ Chilton Laboratory Division in San Francisco, California.
Laboratory Analyses Results
' Soil samples collected from the facility were analyzed for organo-
chlorine pesticides by EPA Method 8080 The concentrations of
pesticides which were detected are provided in Table 1 Laboratory
' reports are provided in Appendix A, Part 1. The range of concentrations
of the organochlorine pesticides that were detected are listed below.
WPI13 2.1 882526.01
