SECTION 3
Tree System Monitoring Methodology
This section provides an overview of the methodology used to perform the tree system
monitoring. In addition,an overview is provided of site maintenance activities performed to
assure that the tree system is healthy and vigorous.
3.1 Tree Monitoring
3.1.1 Monitoring Schedule
Plant-survivorship monitoring of all planted trees was conducted as shown in Table 3-1.
Tree monitoring was conducted for a period of 5 years following installation of the
phytoremediation system as described in the Phytoremediation Cleanup Plan. The objective of
the tree monitoring is to determine if trees have successfully established and survivorship
goals have been achieved. Monitoring consists of annual plant survivorship counts,a health
and vigor assessment, and photo documentation. Annual reporting is a requirement of tree
monitoring. Annual tree monitoring was undertaken in late fall or early winter of each
calendar year per the schedule outlined in Table 3-1.
TABLE 3.1
Schedule of Monitoring and Reporting Activities
Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6
Tree Monitoring Activity 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012
Plant Establishment Monitoring ,x .
s ` g
Plant Establishment Reportingb
Post Plant-Establishment Monitorings
h
Post Plant-Establishment Reportingb t
_ 1,01" yx
Final 5-Year Evaluation and y
Reporting`
a
Year 6 Monitoring and Reportingd
aField work to be conducted in summer or fall of each monitoring year.
bReports to be submitted to RWQCB by the end of each monitoring year.
`The final 5-year evaluation report was included as part of the 5-year monitoring and reporting effort.
dA Year 6 evaluation was performed to verify that tree establishment has been successful and survivorship
goals have been attained.
As shown in Table 3-1, two types of tree monitoring have either been completed or are
1 underway: (1) plant-establishment monitoring,and (2) post plant-establishment monitoring.
Plant-establishment monitoring was conducted for 3 years following tree installation
(as shown in Table 3-1). Post plant-establishment monitoring was completed in Year 4
(2010).The final 5-year evaluation monitoring was performed in 2011 and tree survivorship
goals were met. In Year 6,monitoring was performed to determine if the trees have
continued to successfully establish and verify that survivorship goals have been attained.
These findings are the subject of this report.
