SECTION 3 Tree System Monitoring Methodology This section provides an overview of the methodology used to perform the tree system monitoring. In addition,an overview is provided of site maintenance activities performed to assure that the tree system is healthy and vigorous. 3.1 Tree Monitoring 3.1.1 Monitoring Schedule Plant-survivorship monitoring of all planted trees was conducted as shown in Table 3-1. Tree monitoring was conducted for a period of 5 years following installation of the phytoremediation system as described in the Phytoremediation Cleanup Plan. The objective of the tree monitoring is to determine if trees have successfully established and survivorship goals have been achieved. Monitoring consists of annual plant survivorship counts,a health and vigor assessment,and photo documentation. Annual reporting is a requirement of tree monitoring. Annual tree monitoring was undertaken in late fall or early winter of each calendar year per the schedule outlined in Table 3-1. As shown in Table 3-1, two types of tree monitoring have either been completed or are 1 underway: (1) plant-establishment monitoring,and (2) post plant-establishment monitoring. Plant-establishment monitoring was conducted for 3 years following tree installation (as shown in Table 3-1). Post plant-establishment monitoring was completed in Year 4 (2010).The final 5-year evaluation monitoring was performed in 2011 and tree survivorship goals were met. In Year 6,monitoring was performed to determine if the trees have continued to successfully establish and verify that survivorship goals have been attained. These findings are the subject of this report.
