SECTION 4:TREE MONITORING RESULTS this year but it is possible that new lateralrowth or stump-sprouts- g p sprouts could form on these trees if the tree canopy opens up. The average heath and vigor score for Area A in Year 6 (2012) is 2.4,which is roughly in between the "medium" and "high" ranks (Appendix A). This score is higher than Year 5 ' (2011) but is consistent with scores observed in all other previous monitoring years (Table 4-2). During the summer of Year 5 (2011),a small fire adjacent to Whiskey Slough Road singed the foliage of a few trees in one small part of the planting sub area. The increase in the Year 6 (2012) vigor score compared with Year 5 (2011) is due primarily to the regrowth of tree foliage that was burned in the fire. 4.2 Addition to Area A This planting area is composed of three distinct planting zones (higher,middle,and lower). Six species of trees (and a total of 60 trees) were planted in this area. This area was added during plant installation;therefore, this sub area and planting zones are not depicted in Figure 1-3,Planting Plan. This planting area is shown on Figure 1-4,Actual Planting Layout. Year 1 (2007) Two trees, one box elder and one Fremont cottonwood (out of a total of 60 trees), died in this planting area. The average percent survivorship was 97 percent(Table 4-1). This sub area has the highest plant survivorship of all six planting areas. The average heath and vigor score is 2.2,which is slightly higher than a "medium" rank. Year 2 (2008) Limited replanting in the Addition to Area A planting sub area was conducted in 2007 to replace trees killed by beavers. As shown in Table 4-1,plant survivorship increased between 2007 and 2008 (from 97 percent in Year 1 [2007] to 100 percent in Year 2 [2008]). The average heath and vigor score in Year 2 (2008) was 2.4, slightly higher than the 2007 rank of 2.2. A score of 2.4 is roughly in between"medium" and"high" ranks. Year 3 (2009) As shown in Table 4-1,plant survivorship in this planting area decreased slightly between Year 2 (2008) and Year 3 (2009) (from 100 percent in Year 2 to 97 percent in Year 3). This rate of survivorship (97 percent) is the highest calculated for all planting areas in Year 3 (2009) (Table 4-1). Two Fremont cottonwoods died in this planting area in Year 3 (2 out of 60 trees). One tree was uprooted during the mid-October windstorm and the other tree was likely damaged by beavers. The average heath and vigor score in Year 3 (2009) was 2.5 (Appendix A),slightly higher than the 2007 and 2008 ranks of 2.2 and 2.4 (Table 4-2). A score of 2.5 is roughly in between "medium" and"high" ranks. Year 4 (2010) A total of 60 trees were planted in Addition to Area A. In Year 4 (2010),tree mortality was not observed in this planting area (100 percent survivorship) (Appendix A).
