SECTION 4:TREE MONITORING RESULTS
The averageg health and vigor score in this planting sub area in Year 5 (2011) is 1.7.The Year
5 (2011) score of 1.7 corresponds to a little more than halfway between"low" and"medium"
ranks. The score of 1.7 is slightly higher than the Year 4 (2010) score of 1.6,but Area D '
continues to have the lowest health and vigor score recorded of any of the planting sub
areas (Table 4-2).
Year 6 (2012)
In Year 6 (2012),the rate of tree survivorship in Area D was 78 percent, the lowest of all six
planting sub areas. This rate is slightly higher than the Year 5 (2011) plant survivorship '
(76 percent)but is still below the 80 percent survivorship objective. Area D is the only
planting sub area in Year 6 (2012) that failed to achieve this goal. The lower survivorship
rate in this sub area compared with tree survivorship elsewhere onsite is likely a result of
very poor soil texture, low fertility, and surface disturbance. As described in Section 5,the
final survivorship criterion of 80 percent is calculated on a site basis (and includes all six
planting sub areas). In all six monitoring years (Years 1 through 6), the survivorship rate for '
the entire site exceeded the 80 percent success criterion by a wide margin (Table 4-2).
In Year 6 (2012),11 trees were recorded as dead in Area D (or 22 percent of the 50 trees '
planted) (Appendix A).Similar to previous monitoring years, black willows had the highest
mortality rate (5 trees recorded as dead) in this planting area. One black willow that was
recorded as dead in Year 5 (2011) showed some new growth and was counted as"live" in '
Year 6 (2012).Three box elder, two valley oak,and one Fremont cottonwood were noted as
dead in Year 6 (2012) (Appendix A).Trees planted in this sub area may re-sprout from the
root-stock or show new growth, and this will be re-examined during future site visits and
system checks
The average health and vigor score in Area D in Year 6 (2012) is 1.8,which corresponds to a
little more than halfway between"low" and"medium' ranks. The score of 1.8 is slightly
higher than the Year 5 (2011) score of 1.7 but Area D continues to have the lowest health and
vigor score of any of the planting sub areas (Table 4-2).
414 '
