The Fire Department is familiar with the location and nature of the B-829 Facility as well as
access roads in the area.
I-4.4.1 Release Response for Hazardous Materials and Waste
Due to the robust construction of the B-829 Facility, it is not likely that an emergency involving
the release of hazardous waste would occur. In the event of a major disaster (fire, earthquake,
etc.) that disturbs the integrity of the cap or the drainage system, appropriate maintenance and
repairs will be performed as soon as possible.
This Contingency Plan will be implemented if a fire, explosion, extreme weather or earthquake
compromises the integrity of the cap that releases hazardous waste or hazardous waste
constituents which could threaten human health or the environment.
The detection of hazardous waste constituents in groundwater samples obtained from the B-829
well network at concentrations exceeding Statistical Levels is not considered a release to the
environment. This Contingency Plan is not implemented for groundwater monitoring program
detections.
I-4.4.2 Fire or Explosion
If a fire or explosion occurs, personnel are instructed to do the following:
• Evacuate the area or proceed to a designated safe area and radio the Emergency Dispatcher
the following information.
- Name.
- Location of the incident.
Nature of the incident.
• Any additional information that might affect the response personnel (for example, severity of
the fire or materials at risk in the immediate area).
• Remain on the radio, if safe to do so, to veri
fy the information given to the Emergency
Dispatcher and receive instructions.
• Notify their supervisor.
• Isolate the emergency area.
• Give emergency aid to the injured, if safe to do so.
I-4.4.3 Earthquake
During a significant eart
hquake, employees follow the Self-help Plan safety and evacuation
guidelines. After the shaking stops, and if safe to do so, Facility employees:
• Radio the Emergency Dispatcher to report emergencies and to request emergency assistance
if necessary.
LLNL Site .300 Contingency Plan I-4-6 January 2019
Appendix 14, Building 829
