Any additional information that might affect the response personnel (for example,
severity of the fire or materials at risk in the immediate area).
• Remain on the phone, if safe to do so, to verify the information given to the Emergency
Dispatcher and receive instructions.
• Notify their supervisor.
• Isolate the emergency area.
• Give emergency aid to the injured, if safe to do so.
The 1C (from the Fire Department) is responsible for controlling the incident as described in
Section 4.1.
7.4 Earthquakes
During a significant earthquake, employees follow the Self-help Plan safety and evacuation
guidelines. After the shaking stops, and if safe to do so, Facility employees:
• Call the Emergency Dispatcher (at 911) to report emergencies and to request
emergency assistance.
• Inspect the Facility to verify that there has been no damage to tanks, piping systems,
containers, or storage areas. Cordon off the area to control access.
• Stop any release at its source and contain any released materi
al.
• Assist in the cleanup of any released chemicals or other potentially harmful materials,
as directed in Section 8.
7.5 Power Outages
Routine waste management operations at the Facilities are conducted during daylight hours,
Monday through Thursday, except holidays. It is not anticipated that a power outage would
cause an emergency at a Facility, however, emergency power generators are available 24 hours
per day through Site 300's Maintenance Machine Shop (extension 3-5247) in Building 875.
In addition, agasoline-powered, port
able generator and three floodlights are maintained in th;:.
RHWM's release response trailer. This equipment is available for use during non -routine wast;:
management operations or emergency situations. Employees have access to flashlights to
monitor the Facility during a power outage.
7.6 Equipment Failure
Procedures have been developed to manage situations in which equipment failure may cause a
release of hazardous or toxic waste or materials. Equipment failure includes forklift failure
during transfer operations and treatment unit failure (burn cage, burn pan, associated equipment).
Malfunctions are addressed in the Facility safety procedure.
LLNL Site 300 Contingency Plan 22 January 2019
