I-2.2 EWSF DESCRIPTION
I-2.2.1 General Description
The EWSF is used to store explosives wastes and small quantities of primary explosives, such as
waste detonators, squibs, blasting caps, and other initiators. The location of the EWSF (shown in
Figure 144) is in the Process Area on a ridge in the southeast portion of Site 300 in San
Joaquin County. Ground surface elevations range from approximately 930 to 960 ft, and the
terrain slopes steeply toward the west and east.
I-2.2.2 Physical Description
The EWSF consists of two earth -covered, concrete magazines; two earth -covered, corrugated-
metal magazines; and one prefabricated metal building (Magazine 816 [M816]).
The magazines are built in asemi-circle in a knoll with their doors facing out from the knoll.
The materials and methods of construction are designed to minimize sympathetic fires and
explosions by maintaining a fairly consistent temperature and humidity within each structure.
Compliance with explosive weight and distance limits also help to ensure the safe operation of
the EWSF.
The magazines and M816 are designed to manage storm water run-on by preventing
precipitation from entering the structures. Magazines 3 and 4 have canopies over the doorways
and concrete ramps sloping down from the entrances to drain run-off away from the unit.
Magazines 2 and 5 have canopies of corrugated metal over their entrances to keep precipitation
away from the entry. M816 is equipped with galvanized steel gutters and downspouts to
facilitate drainage away from the building.
Access to the EWSF area is secured by an 8 -ft -high security/safety fence and the Process Area
Control Post.
The layout of the EWSF is shown in Figure I-2-2. Additional details for the EWSF design,
construction, and operations are provided in Sections IV and VI of the EWSF Operations Plan.
I-2.2.3 Description of the Waste Handled
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) operations include the research and
development of explosives materials. Explosives wastes are generated only from LLNL weapons
programs research and support operations located at the Livermore Site and Site 300. The waste
generator identifies and characterizes the wastes at the point of generation. Explosives wastes are
well characterized but vary over time. Table I-2-1 lists the explosive waste forms that may be
stored in the EWSF.
LLNL Site 300 Contingency Plan 1-2-4 January 2019
Appendix 1-2, EWSF
