I-3.2 CSA DESCRIPTION
I-3.2.1 General Description
The CSA is used to store non -explosive, non -radioactive hazardous wastes at Site 300. It is
located at Building 883 in the General Services Area near the southern boundary of Site 300
(Figure I-34).
I-3.2.2 Physical Description
The CSA is a covered, concrete pad approximately 49.5 ft x 35 ft. A 6 -in. (minimum), concrete
curb surrounds the slab to contain any spills or run-ons. The open-air Facility has a flat roof
constructed of galvanized, corrugated steel supported by 4 -in. steel pipe columns and open -web
steel joists. The layout of the CSA is shown in Figure I-34.
Although the CSA is not located in a flood zone, run-on control structures, including a roof,
grades sloping away from the unit, and storm drains, have been provided to protect the waste
containers from storm water. The CSA flooring is graded toward a sump, and the unit is designed
to provide secondary containment. Waste containers containing free -liquids are stored in portable
secondary containment units to provide additional control of potential spills.
The paving around Building 883 was constructed to facilitate easy and safe access of forklifts
and other equipment bearing waste containers to the CSA. This construction minimizes the risk
A hazards during loading and unloading operations.
A 6 -ft -high cyclone security fence encloses the perimeter of the CSA. The gate to the CSA is
locked when the Facility is unattended.
Operations at the CSA are limited to storage in closed containers. The only operations allowed in
the CSA where open containers may be present are inspection, sampling, and hazardous waste
transfer operations.
I-3.2.3 Description of the Wastes Handled
[-3.2.3.1 Wastes Stored at the CSA
LLNL's research activities generate a variety of waste types typically in small quantities. The
general waste streams managed at the CSA include flammables, combustibles, halogenated and
nonhalogenated solvents, flammable solids, oxidizers, acids, bases. poisons, mercury and
mercury -contaminated waste, reactive materials, and other miscellaneous chemical waste and
contaminated debris. Table I-34 identifies the types of wastes that the CSA is permitted to store
and also includes hazardous constituents of the waste streams that may be present in significant
quantities.
1-3.2.3.3 Records of Waste Stored at the CSA
The Facility Representative or designee maintains records of wastes stored at the Facility and
provides this information to the Incident Commander (IC) and Site 300 Emergency Manager as
requested. The information provided by waste records includes identification of wastes involved,
quantities, and Facility status.
LLNL Site .?00 Contingency Plarr 1- i---!
