First Quarter 2005 <br /> Thrifty#171 <br /> April 13, 2005 <br /> Page 4 <br /> A summary of the well installation/abandonment of pilot testing activities and discussions with <br /> the SJCEHD are presented below <br /> • On February 22, 2005, GHC oversaw drilling of well EW-5d, the dnller refused to <br /> abandon well MW-5 due to safety concerns regarding nearby power lines, <br /> • On February 23, 2005, GHC oversaw installation of wells EW-5d and EW-5s and GHC <br /> and West Hazmat began to develop onsite wells to remove silt buildup, <br /> • On February 24, 2005, development of the onsite wells was completed along with <br /> development of the two new wells EW-5d and EW-5s The SJCEHD recommended <br /> installing vapor well VW-5 in the borehole of well MW-5 that was to be abandoned The <br /> reason to keep the vapor well in the same location was to ensure that the plume area <br /> impacted by well MW-5 was the same for VW-5, <br /> • On March 9, 2005, the SJCEHD requested a workplan addendum to discuss the well <br /> abandonment of MW-5 and installation of vapor well VW-5 in the same borehole, <br /> • On March 15, 2005, Thrifty submitted the Addendum to Workplan for Well <br /> Abandonment/Installation of Groundwater Extraction Wells and Pilot Testing to the <br /> SJCEHD, <br /> • On March 21, 2005, GHC contacted the SJCEHD to advise them of the schedule for well <br /> abandonment The SJCEHD indicated they did not approve the procedure for installing <br /> well VW-5 in the borehole of well MW-5 because the grout would not set up in time to <br /> install well VW-5 on the same day that well MW-5 was abandoned The SJCEHD <br /> requested that bentonite chips be used instead of grout On March 21, 2005, GHC sent an <br /> e-mail to the SJCEHD describing the well installation procedure including the use of <br /> bentonite chips On March 22, the SJCEHD sent an e-mail approving the installation <br /> procedure (Appendix E), <br /> • On March 17 ,2005, GHC conducted an 8-hour MPE event in well EW-5d, <br /> • On March 24, 2005, GHC conducted an 8-hour MPE event in well EW-5s, <br /> • On March 25,2005, GHC and West Hazmat abandoned well MW-5 by over-drilling and <br /> installed vapor well VW-5 in the same borehole, <br /> • On March 31, 2005, GHC conducted a 12-hour pump test in well EW-5d, and <br /> • On April 6, 2005, GHC conducted a 12-hour pump test on well EW-5s <br />
