(U/5)1.3
Emission (lbs/ton) = k*(0.0032)* --
-(x,1(M/2)1.4
/2)1..
where:
k = particle size multiplier (0.35 for PM-10)
U = mean windspeed in miles per hour (10 mph typically)
M = material moisture content (10% during the dry season)
The resulting emission factor is 0.0027 lbs/ton. Daily emissions were estimated on the handling of
1152 cubic yards at 1.6 tons/cu. yard, or 1843 tons/day. The resulting emission is 5.0 pound/day.
Storaee Losses
Storage losses were estimated using an emission factor taken from Table 8-24-4 of AP-42. The wind
erosion from stripped or graded overburden is 0.38 tons per acre per year, or 2.08 pounds per day per
acre. It was assumed that disturbed but untreated area would average about 1 acre, providing a daily
emission of 2.1 pounds per day.
Vehicle and Equipment Emissions
Truck emissions were estimated using emission factors generated by the EMFAC7-PC computer
program for diesel trucks at an average speed of 30 MPH. The average one-way haul distance was
assumed to be 9 miles.
Emissions from on-site equipment were based on emission factors provided by the Bay Area Air Quality
Management District. These factors, given in grams per cubic yard of material excavated, were
multiplied by a daily throughput of 1152 cubic yards per day (16 hours/day,4 trucks per hour, 18 cubic
yards per truck).
