For this project, criteria were developed to reasonably conclude whether a depression might be
associated with a semisubterranean structure based on the known range of sizes and types
extracted from ethnographic accounts. Figure 1 presents these ranges in comparison to the sizes
of depressions found at the Buckeye Ranch. Most of the depressions were found to be much
shallower than the depths reported ethnographically. This however, should not be surprising,
as pits will collapse and fill with time. To correct for this inevitability, it was assumed that a
pit in a state of deterioration may have filled in as much as 40 to 50 cm, consequently lowering
the expected range for depth.
Depressions found in association with sites and falling within a range of 2 to 4.5 m diameter and
measuring 15 cm or deeper were considered possible sweathouses. Depressions found in
association with sites and falling within a range of 12 to 19.5 m diameter and measuring 40 cm
or deeper were considered possible assembly/dance houses. Those depressions found in
association with sites and having diameters falling between those expected for either sweathouses
or assembly/dance houses and measuring 20 cm or deeper were considered possible earth lodges.
17
