4.2.3 CA-SJO-
If the CCIC plotting for this site is correct, it exists within a densely canopied riparian forest.
The original site record, however, describes it as a site 200 yards southwest of the Mokelumne
River. Schenck and Dawson (1929:311), however, note that many of the locations for their 92
sites are approximate. It may be that this site was not accurately plotted. A small mound was
recorded during BioSystems' field work, which is located approximately 400 ft. to the north
northwest. It may be that this mound, recorded as site . is what was originally
recorded as CA-SJO- However, as there was no certainty regarding this tentative correlation,
it was recorded as a separate site. No other cultural materials were observed in this general
vicinity to indicate the presence of another site. It is fair to note, though, that ground surface
was obscured by an herbaceous/shrub cover amounting to 60 percent. It is entirely possible that
this site was overlooked.
4.2.4 CA-SJO-j
This site was initially recorded by Grosscup (1949). The site record indicates township/range
coordinates. Subsequent locational information was added (by CCIC employees?), which
provides latitude/longitude coordinates, UTM coordinates, and revised township/range
coordinates.
The site was then rerecorded by Riddell (1970). The 1970 site record questioned Grosscup's
placement of the site on Tracy Lake and yet no new locational information was provided. To
further confuse matters, Riddell described the site on a point of land at the south end of (Tracy
Lake]. This record exhibits the same subsequently added latitude/longitude coordinates, UTM
coordinates, and new township/range coordinates. The locational description provided by
Riddell was later crossed out by CCIC employee (JIB on 9/14/77, and changed to read "400
ft. northeast of the Mokelumne and 400 ft. south of an inlet on the south shore of Tracy Lake."
These conflicting locations are plotted on Map 10.
The general vicinity in which this site should be located was crisscrossed several times. Despite
the efforts of Biosystems' crew, the site could not be relocated. The site was originally
27
