7.0 SUMMARY
Nine prehist:ic sites were recorded or rerecorded during the current investigation. Careful site
boundary delineations provided crucial information for developing project modifications which will
result in avoidance of damage to these cultural resources. It should, however, be qualified that
previously unidentified subsurface archaeological deposits may possibly be encountered during
ground disturbing activities. Prehistoric archaeological materials which could be encountered
include, but are not limited to: obsidian or chert flakes or tools; ground stone mortars, slabs or
pestles; deposits of shell or dietary bone; locally darkened midden soils; and human interments.
It is recommended that for circumstances where subsurface work is planned within 30
meters (=98 feet) of known site locations, that a qualified cultural resources professional be
present to monitor for the unearthing of such materials. If such deposits are discovered
during subsurface work where no monitor is present, it is recommended that work at the
location of any find cease, and a qualified cultural resources professional be contacted immediately
to examine and evaluate the discovery. Although it is beyond our scope of work to consider
impacts due to construction staging areas, with the southern access road to the Buckeye
Ranch property bisecting site SJO-43,BiosSystems is recommending that use of this access
route be restricted from heavy equipment traffic to avoid further site damage which might
result due to compaction.
37
