i
I
Ecological!Evaludtion or Broveiil woods
P.C. rlutck
i
NOTE: The folio Ing 3 pages replace page 3 in the 1989 report.
Soils
The report made to the Nature Conservancy in 1989 was based on
soils inrormatloi) presented in the 1953 Soil Survey or San Joaquin County.
in July 1990, a dart or a new San Joaquin County Sol I Survey became
available. This section replaces and updates the inrormation in the 1989
evaluation of Broirel li Woods.
The recently available San Joaquin Soil Survey ( 1990) presents more
detailed soil Information than was previously available for this area. In the
1953 Soil Surveylon ly two major soils types were mapped within the
boundaries of Broveili Woods. In the 1990 Sol] Survey, the Soil Conservation
Service (UtA) lcintirled five soil types within the boundartes or the
property now tali d Buckeye Ranch- Columbia fine sandy loam, 8ruella sandy
loam, SanJoaquirtsandy loam. Kimball loam,
Columbia, Bruellaland Kimball are considered prime agrIcultu al soils,
however these soils comprise a relatively smal I proportion of the property
and one of these, Columbia, lies beneath the oak forest. The soils map,
redrawn by Bob Beit of Kjeldsen-Sinnock and Associates, inc., Stockton, CA,
Is presented In Figure 2.
i
The so11s of Buckeye Ranch share three mayor characteristics: slow
Permeability, and on underlying hardpan, and low erosion potential, Most of
the soils, subsoils{, or claypans have a high clay content and are subject to
seasonal shrinklnqand sweiling. Limitations Include 1 ) low permeability, of
particular concer Ifor septic systems and irrigation, and 2) the need for
well-designed roa s and buildings to avoid structural damage due to
shrinking an¢ swe Ing of the soil. Management considerations for these soil
include 1 ) reestric ng heavy equipment traffic from the soil when It is
saturated, a4d 2) turning organic materials to the soil to maintain
fertility and-avoldicrusting. in general, the erosion potential of the soils is
Quite low.
The distinctive woods or Buckeye Ranch, known for many years as
Brovelli Woods, arf flourishing on Columbia fine sandy loams (CE).
Columbia soils are esignated as prime agricultural soils. They are usually
deeply channeled, tly drained, and frequently flooded. The main
limitations or Colutnbia soils are slow permeability and the relatively
shallow depth to thie hard substratum, a depth which averages about sixty
 I
S
i
 0 d OTO oN 90 OT 367 7-
