Muick <br /> Structures <br /> Careful siting of structures and avoidance of trees and vernal <br /> pools during construction will protect most of the vegetation . Homes <br /> and the clubhouse , as well as stables and other structures should <br /> should be kept out of the forest and identified vernal pool areas . <br /> Commonly, during construction, serious injuries to trees and shrubs <br /> are incurred through careless use of equipment, ex. backing tractors <br /> into trees, parking next to trees, etc. Careful equipment operation <br /> will prevent most of these problems . <br /> Landscaping <br /> Rather than recommending which species to use in landscaping <br /> around homes and other structures , I strongly recommend developing a <br /> list of prohibited species based on the most noxious and <br /> invasive species in the California Native Plant Society 's "Escaped <br /> Exotics List" . To this rather short list I would add non-native <br /> species of oaks and buckeyes. <br /> Besides the selection of landscaping material , the placement <br /> of lawns and irrigated landscaping around the existing trees is the <br /> next most important concern. In general , the existing native trees <br /> will be negatively affected by summer watering. Since the sewage will <br /> be disposed of through individual septic systems, the location of <br /> these systems will also affect the vegetation. Again , staying away from <br /> existing trees is important. Consulting with the landscape architect <br /> during the early design stages is very important in minimizing <br /> conflicts between landscape plants and the native vegetation of <br /> Brovelli Woods. <br /> Golf Course <br /> The golf course will be recontoured and turfed during <br /> construction. The two most important concerns are first, to maintain <br /> the existing drainage patterns to protect the golf course during floods and <br /> to simultaneously maintain an important dynamic process of the forest; <br /> and second, to avoid incidental injury to existing vegetation by <br /> equipment used in construction. <br /> The Lakes <br /> In a previous section I mentioned the range of effects on <br /> vegetation from the possible variations of filling the lakes . <br /> Repercussions of dredging , filling and recontouring activities as well <br /> as incidental damage to trees during construction are concerns . <br /> Phase 2 : Protection of Native Vegetation durina Maintenance Activities <br /> Paths and Roads <br /> Minimal pruning and avoidance of herbicide along roads and paths <br /> is preferred. The identification of a buffer zone will clarify <br /> limits of maintenance activities. <br /> Golf Course <br /> 3 15 <br />
