Crops grown during the summer are commonly irrigated, <br /> although in a few places the moisture stored in the soily during the <br /> rainv season is sufficient to carry the crop to maturity. Nonirrigated <br /> crops, such as small grains, are planted principally in autumn, make <br /> their greatest growth during the winter and spring, and are har- <br /> vested in the early part of the dry season. Native forage plants <br /> begin growth with the advent of the autumn rains and serve as <br /> pasture for livestock until late spring. After this local forage is <br /> exhausted the animals are moved, either to the upper slopes of the <br /> Sierra Nevada to the east or down on the grain-stubble and other <br /> fields of the lowlands, where a high water table promotes plant <br /> growth throughout the summer. With irrigation, the growing of <br /> such perennial crops as tree fruits and grapes is marked by winter <br /> dormancy and summer activity. <br /> The average date of the latest killing frost is March 5, and that of <br /> the first is November 15, giving an average frost-free season of 255 <br /> days. Frost has been recorded as late as `May 1 and as early as <br /> October 4. The occurrence of spring frosts, when plants are begin- <br /> iiing their growth, is a critical factor in the more intensive agricul- <br /> tural pursuits. Oil-burning heaters are kept ready for use in a large <br /> '} proportion of orchards until the middle or latter part of 11May, at <br /> which time danger from frost is considered to have passed.
