Brovelli Woods Raptor Survey
Methods
A raptor survey was conducted on the Brovelli Woods project
site between 0730 and 1430 hours on June 24, 1990 . The survey
consisted of driving all existing roads and walking meandering
random belt transects throughout the proposed project site . All
raptor observations were recorded on an aerial photo of the proposed
project site . An index of raptor observations and possible nesting
activity noted on the aerial photo of the proposed project site is
provided in Appendix A. A list of wildlife observed during the
survey was compiled and is presented in Appendix B . Binoculars
(8x40) and a spotting scope (20x) were used to assist in the
positive identification of observed species .
Results
I . Observed raptors on site
Six species of raptors were observed on the proposed project
site during the survey: Swainson' s hawk (Buteo swainsoni) , red-
tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) , red-shouldered hawk (Buteo
lineatus) , American kestrel (Falco sparverius) , black-shouldered
kite (Elanus caeruleus) and great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) .
Sensitive species status reports on observed and potential special
status raptors occurring on the proposed project site were compiled
and are presented in Appendix C .
Swainson' s hawks are strongly suspected of nesting on the site,
- as three probable nesting territories were located during the survey
(see aerial photo and Appendix A) . Swainson' s hawk is listed by the
IS
