The northern harrier (Circus cyaneus) , rough-legged hawk (Buteo lagopus) , ferruginous hawk (Buteo regalis) , prairie falcon (Falco mexicanus) , golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) , sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus) and long-eared owl (Asio otus) utilize similar habitats to those found on the proposed project site during the winter months . The sharp-shinned hawk, long-eared owl, golden eagle and prairie falcon are all species of special concern in California. The sharp-shinned hawk utilizes riparian habitats in the lower elevations in winter as foraging territories and roost sites . Long- eared owls roost in dense stands of willows and forage in surrounding grasslands and savannah habitat during the winter months . The riparian habitat along the Mokelumne River in the southwestern section of the proposed project site could potentially support both these species . The marshes, grassland and savannah on the proposed project site provide ideal foraging habitat for wintering ferruginous hawks, northern harriers, rough-legged hawks, prairie falcons and golden eagles .
