■ estimate seasonal and long-term availability of runoff from Jahant Slough,
divertable water in the Mokelumne River, and groundwater;
■ calculate the effects of groundwater pumping at the site on flow in the
Mokelumne River, regional groundwater levels, and pumping capacity of wells
on adjacent property; and
■ estimate the effects of diversions from the Mokelumne River on flow regime.
Water Quality
The principal water quality concerns related to the project are:
■ suitability of water from the three possible sources for irrigation, drinking, and
aquatic habitat;
■ the potential for contamination of groundwater or the lakes from septic tank
leachate, onsite irrigation-return flow, urban runoff from developed areas, or
inflow of agricultural tailwater from adjacent property; and
■ the potential effects of temperature variations, nutrients, toxic compounds, and
suspended sediment on the aquatic ecosystem of the lakes.
To investigate these issues, Jones & Stokes Associates will perform the following
tasks:
■ review existing groundwater and surface water quality data available from San
Joaquin County, the California Department of Water Resources, and U.S.
Geological Survey;
■ interview local farmers and agency personnel to identify agricultural or other
chemicals used on and around the site;
■ collect one water sample from an onsite well and analyze it for compliance with
drinking water limits in Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations;
■ collect up to four samples of agricultural tailwater entering the beaver pond and
runoff from Jahant Slough (if flow is occurring during the study period) and
U analyze them for no more than four likely agricultural contaminants such as
organo chlorine, organophosphate, and carbonate;
■ estimate the potential for contamination of domestic wells or the lakes by septic
tank leachate, irrigation-return flow, or urban runoff from developed areas;
III-13
