of the existing Southeast Clear Lake Wastewater Treatment System. A final report was
submitted in 1978. The project was 75% federally funded.
CA-Mer-215, the Wofsen Mound
The three phases of field excavations were done in 1977 and 1978 at the location of
the proposed sewage treatment plant facilities for the City of Newman, California. Phase
III fieldwork of the major site included excavation of 400 units and exposure of nine
housepit depressions. The analytical and interpretive report describes the cultural sequence,
which spans the time from Paleo Indian occupation to the terminal site use around A.D.
1860. During Phase IV (1978), human remains exposed by the winter flood waters were
exhumed. This phase of work was done in close cooperation with Native American
representatives. The project was 75% federally funded.
Calero Reservoir
This private reservoir submerged a very significant archeological site. Salvage
excavations were undertaken in 1979 to recover significant archeological and historical data
before inundation. The prehistoric site was shown to be one of the earliest known sites in
the Sacramento Valley (10,000-16,000 B.C.) through recovery and analysis of over 50,000
artifacts. Over 110 units were excavated. The final report was submitted in 1981.
V-12
