airport) and the Stockton fire station as reported in NOAA (National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration)records. The two Stockton stations are located approximately
17 miles south of Buckeye Ranch. For all statistics except average annual rainfall the
Stockton records were used. Although the Lodi station is closer to the Ranch those records
could not be used because data for all variables besides rainfall are missing from Lodi
reports.
The average annual temperature is 650 Fahrenheit. Winters are cool and the average
January temperature is 450 F with a range between 32.3 -56.50 F. Summers are hot and
the average July temperature is 750 F with ranges between 54 -970 F. The maximum
temperature recorded was 1140 F in July of 1972 and the minimum (before the December
1990 cold snap) was 190 F in 1963. The frost free growing season lasts about 240 days.
Precipitation averages about 14" annually in the Stockton area and the Lodi station receives
about 16" annually. December and January are usually the wettest months. Little or no
rainfall falls between June and September. Fog, locally referred to as tule fog, is common
in the winter and the Stockton area records an average of 43 days of heavy fog per year.
The topography of the area modifies the regional climate and the numerous drainages create
patterns of cold air flow, which may result in localized frost pockets. The forest with its
dense, evergreen canopy insulates the ground beneath it and protects the understory
vegetation from frost.
2.3 Geology and Soils
Preliminary information on Buckeye Ranch soils was collected from the U.S. Soil
Conservation Service by Pam Muick in 1989 and is included in the Buckeye Ranch
Planned District Description. In addition Lowry &Associates drilled a number of borings
on the property in 1990. The results of the borings are also included in the Planned District
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
23
