Although the same tree species are found in both sections of the forest, the structure of the
sections is distinctly different. Interior live oaks are similar in size in both section, although
i
they differ greatly in density (numbers per acre). In the eastern forest, there is an average
of 23 interior live oaks per acre. The interior live oaks in the western forest are almost
twice as dense at 48 trees per acre.
The number of valley oaks were similar between the two forests but differed greatly in
size. Valley oak were much larger, both in height and diameter,in the eastern forest. Not
only were the valley oaks smaller in the western forest but several were dead or dying.
Only a few small box elder were found on the plots, averaging seven stems per acre on the
western forest and three per acre in the eastern forest. Several species of trees were
observed in the forest but not found on the sample plots including ash, cottonwood, and
walnut. Table 3 presents a comparison between the two forest sections.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
46
