area. The narrow bands of cleared understory will provide less habitat for terrestrial
foragers and canopy insectivores. Brovelli Woods is already an island habitat and any
additional fragmentation could further impact the area, including the status of Cooper's
hawk. Carrying capacity for forest and diurnal raptors could be reduced. Other guilds
should not be adversely impacted by this action. California Department of Fish and Game
indicate a concern that fragmentation will increase the potential for brown-headed cowbird
nest parasitism. This perceived impact is discussed in the riparian restoration section,
wildlife benefits. Refer to the Swainson's hawk mitigation plan (Appendix F) for
discussion of impacts on this species.
Impacts on the wildlife of Buckeye Ranch will be discussed for each habitat affected. The
great diversity of birdlife on the Ranch prohibits discussion on a species-by-species basis.
Instead, key species guilds that occur on the property will be highlighted. The guilds
include:
Diurnal Raptors - Species that capture prey with raptorial feet. Species include: kites,
hawks, falcons, and eagles. Guse (1990) discusses the raptor guild occurring on the
property.
Canopy Insectivores - Includes small passerine species that readily form mixed-species
feeding flocks. Most glean insects from the surface of leaves and bark. Species include
kinglets, warblers, vireos, bushtits, and titmice.
Bark Feeders - Includes species that procure their food (usually insects) by probing and or
drilling in bark. Species include woodpeckers, nuthatches, and creepers.
Cavity Nesters - Species that nest in natural or bird-made cavities. Includes wood duck,
woodpeckers, nuthatches, titmice, and wrens.
Terrestrial Feeders - Includes birds that scratch in leaf litter or pick. Most are omnivorous.
Species include: sparrows, towhees, and quail.
Flocking Omnivores- Species that forage in winter flocks in open spaces. Most are
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
99
