TABLE 10
Outline of
Perennial Grass Restoration Techniques
Upland Sites
Fall of Year 1
1. Lightly disk site after the first fall rains (enough rains to germinate weed seeds).
2. Install irrigation system.
3. Sow with meadow barley, California brome, blue wildrye and valley
needlegrass, using a planting drill.
4. Plant smaller quantities of rhizomes of creeping wildrye, by hand, at
approximately 10-15 foot intervals.
5. Plant smaller quantities of needlegrass in 1 x 6 inch tubes at approximately 10-
15 foot centers.
Spring of Year 2
1. Mow grassland sites 1-2 times to control annual grasses.
2. If spring is unusually dry, supplemental watering will be needed in May.
3. Apply a broad leaf herbicide, such as Roundup, after final mowing to control
weed growth.
Summer of Year 2
1. Irrigate grassland sites to favor perennial grasses. Deep water every
two weeks.
2. Mow perennial grasses in late July. Let grasses go dormant in August.
Fall of Year 2
1. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide, such as chlorosulfuron, for control of
broadleaf fortis.
Fall/Winter of Year 3
1. Hand-plant native perennial plant plugs of rarer local species.
Spring of Year 3
1. Mow twice to control annual grasses.
2. Apply contact herbicide for control of broadleaf weeds.
Summer of Year 3
1. Irrigate grassland sites to favor perennial grasses. Water bi-weekly.
2. Mow perennial grasses in midsummer.
Fall of Year 3
1. Plant native broadleaf wildflowers.
Spring of Year 3 and 4
Beginning of Maintenance Cycle
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
152
