Pilot project 2: Riparian Forest Regeneration Test Plantings
The riparian forest test plantings will be designed to test single factors and combinations of
factors thought to influence natural regeneration. Such factors include the responses of the
forest species to flooding, soil and canopy conditions. Table 13 contains a brief list of the
factors to be tested. In addition, information from a stand-age analysis will provide other
essential information in developing a long term plan for sustaining these forests.
CTable 13. General Tree Restoration Techniques
Various tree restoration techniques will be used depending upon the site factors,
regeneration requirements of individual species, and specific restoration goals. There are
relatively easy and well-established techniques for the establishment of native riparian and
woodland tree species. Since ample seed and cutting sources are found at the ranch, all
revegetation materials will be collected on-site. Oak woodland and riparian restoration will
emphasize tree and shrub planting. It is assumed that typical understory shrubs, vines, and
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
174
