restoration plantings.
Acorns generally will be planted in areas with a fairly high water table, so little additional
irrigation will be necessary. Somewhat drier sites will require additional spring and early
summer irrigation for the first year. Planting basins will be dug to increase the amount of
water retained during irrigation. Expensive drip irrigation systems are not proposed;
however, if necessary,first-year only watering will be done with a portable pump, using
adjacent surface water.
Seedlings. The planting of seedlings can be an effective backup approach to acorn
planting. Since fall-planted acorns can be lost to various predators and other factors, a
reserve of seedlings grown from the same acorn source can be used to replant areas, thus
eliminating the need to wait until an entire year for a new crop of acorns. In this way, less
than one-year-old seedlings could be planted in the spring in sites where acorns have been
f
lost due to predators or other factors.
Buckeye. Ash and Box Elder Planting Techniques. Buckeye and box elder seeds will be
collected in late summer and fall, scarified if necessary, and directly planted in late fall-
winter. Oregon ash seeds will be collected in the fall, and direct seeding will be tested in
i
late fall-winter. Standard planting techniques, including weed mats, tree shelters, water
basins, will be utilized.
Cottonwood and Willow Cuttings. Willows and cottonwoods are easily planted from
cuttings. Cuttings can be taken during the spring and early summer(cottonwoods only
during spring) and placed into moistened ground. At Tracy Lakes, there is a narrow zone
suitable for the planting of cuttings due to the steep banks. Some sites, for example, may
be inundated by water for several weeks, then may become too dry to support tree growth
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
178
