y
greater yellowlegs, and American avocet (Recurvirostra americana)represent the former
group. Edge habitat can be selectively managed on Tracy Lake. Herons, egrets, and
several species of gulls will also benefit from water level management that supports
shorebirds. Once completed the restored seasonal marsh will provide shallow ponds,
marsh, and fluctuating shallows. These habitats are utilized by 18 species of shorebirds
that migrate through or winter in the California Delta.
In its current hydrologic regime,Tracy Lakes will not provide habitat during fall migration
(August - October) due to dry lake conditions. However, restoration efforts, and pumped
well water will create shallow flooded conditions that will support a substantial fall
migration (September - November). Dowitchers, yellowlegs, sandpipers, common snipe,
plovers, and others will utilize the early flooded conditions. Due to the deepness of both
lakes expected each spring (as is the case under current hydrologic regimes), migrants will
not be attracted to the seasonal marsh habitat of South Lake.
Resident wetland species such as common yellowthroat, song sparrow, marsh wren and
red-winged blackbirds are all expected to increase in number, particularly during the
breeding season, as emergent marsh is re-established.
7.32 Seasonal Marshes
Goals:
• To enhance, create, and manage a diversity of seasonal marsh community types that will
benefit numerous species of wildlife.
Objectives:
• To promote and maintain maximum biological diversity.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
184
