potential mosquito problems. However, they should pose no more of a problem than
alfalfa fields.
Various control measures will be implemented. Proposed seasonal wetland development
will include deep water areas where mosquito fish (Gambusia sp.), which feed on
mosquitoes, will survive. These areas will serve to harbor fish populations which can then
move into the seasonal wetlands.
Vegetation will be managed to allow mosquito fish access to areas where mosquitoes could
become a problem. Additional mosquito control measures may include the use of granular
formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israeliensis as a biological control agent.
However, certain vegetation management strategies could led to mosquito problems,
namely, summer irrigation for watergrass germination. This will call for close cooperation
with the San Joaquin Mosquito Abatement District. The ability to quickly drain wetlands
and the use of various biological control agents will be a prerequisite for mosquito control
in summer, moist-soil management.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
192
