7.33 Open Water -- Tracy Lakes
Goals:
• To preserve, enhance and restore Tracy Lakes to benefit wildlife dependent upon open
water environments such as various species of fish, fish-eating birds, and mammals and
to create a water storage basin for irrigation of golf course fairways.
Objectives:
• To enhance and preserve approximately 110 to 196 acres of open water habitat.
• To create approximately 110 to 196 acres of permanent lake habitat.
• To construct a new water control structure at two locations within South Tracy
conditions of the Lake.
• To develop conditions suitable for a diversity of native fish species.
• To develop a monitoring program, to be implemented by a competent biologist over a 5
year period, to insure that the above objectives are met. Specifically, the monitoring
program will document that the water level management is providing proper inundation
of the mitigation site; that the site has developed the targeted biotic communities,
including fish; and that the site supports other wildlife species.
Tracy Lakes, when full, occupy 350 acres. Historically, the basin developed into lakes on
a seasonal basis only. Typically, the lakes filled by midwinter after rains completely
saturated the soil profile. By midsummer, the lakes drew down completely. Because the
lakes bottoms have been farmed since 1940, the seasonal period of inundation was
shortened due to the pumping out of water, which lengthened the farming season. The
restoration plan provides details for the restoration of Tracy Lakes.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
194
